Substance Use Evaluation
What is a substance use evaluation?
A substance use evaluation (or Alcohol and Drug Use Evaluation) is an in-depth assessment designed to understand the factors influencing an individual’s use of alcohol and drugs. The evaluation process includes a clinical interview and standardized testing to gather essential information. The goal is to assess whether there is a substance use disorder, the extent of the disorder, and the most appropriate treatment options.
Who are substance abuse evaluations for?
Most commonly, clients are court-ordered to complete a substance use evaluation due to charges such as Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), drug possession, or similar offenses. The evaluation helps the court understand whether substance use played a role in your legal situation and assists in determining the next steps for rehabilitation or treatment.
What is the purpose of the assessment?
The evaluation aims to:
Determine factors influencing your substance use: We assess the reasons behind your use of substances—whether for coping, social reasons, or other factors.
Assess if you qualify for a substance use disorder diagnosis: Based on your history and responses, we will determine whether you meet the criteria for a substance use disorder.
Recommend appropriate treatment options: Depending on the findings, we will suggest the best treatment path to support your recovery, whether it's outpatient treatment, therapy, counseling, or more intensive programs.
What happens during the assessment?
The assessment includes a clinical interview and standardized testing. The clinical interview is a conversation between the client and therapist, where you will discuss your history, patterns of substance use, family background, mental health, and other factors influencing your behaviors. This interview helps to build a comprehensive understanding of your situation. The standardized testing varies for each patient. It can includes a series of validated questionnaires and assessments designed to objectively measure the severity and nature of your substance use. These tools help us gather consistent data to support a reliable diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
How long will the evaluation take?
Typically, the evaluation process takes about 1.5 to 2 hours for the clinical interview and testing. The report is usually available within 2-5 business days after the assessment.
What happens after the evaluation is complete?
After completing the evaluation, you will be provided with a written report detailing the results of your assessment. This report will include a summary of your clinical interview, results from the standardized testing, a diagnosis (if applicable), and treatment recommendations.
You will be able to submit this report to the court to demonstrate your compliance with the court order and help inform any decisions regarding your case.
